According to 2010 statistics, 9.3 million individuals in the US underwent a cosmetic procedure last year. This number represents more than double the cosmetic procedures performed in 1997.
Data from the US Census Bureau and the American Board of Medical Specialties, was used to calculate the most vain state as a consequence of the high number of plastic surgeons. The news source KSC News, reports that The District of Columbia, with one plastic surgeon for every 27,351 residents, is the "vainest" state in the union. Other states include Maryland, Florida, New York, California, New Jersey, Utah, Hawaii and Delaware.
The most common non-surgical procedures in 2010 were botulinum toxin type A injections (such as Botox and Dysport), hyaluronic acid injections (such as Juvederm and Restylane), laser hair reduction, laser skin resurfacing (such as ActiveFX, TotalFX and Fraxel) and chemical peels.
The most common surgical procedures included breast augmentation surgery, liposuction, cosmetic eyelid surgery, tummy tucks (abdominoplasty) and breast reduction surgery.
